Abstract

In this study, a cross-cultural corpus analysis between the Netherlands and France has been conducted to investigate the influence of cultural dimensions on news framing. The foundation of the study is the cultural dimensions ‘Power Distance’, ‘Uncertainty Avoidance’ and ‘Individualism/Collectivism’ of Hofstede (1980). Additionally, the basis for the news frames is the frames introduced by Neuman et al. (1992), Ogbodo et al. (2020) and Tversky and Kahneman (1985). In the study, 60 public news media articles have been coded on the absence or presence of the aforementioned cultural values and the absence or presence of certain news frames. The results of this study are amongst others that French news media uses significantly more ‘Power Distance’ in articles than Dutch media articles. The findings of the study are in line with previous research from Terpstra et al. (2021) which concludes that French COVID-19 policies are more hierarchical in structure than Dutch policies. The study contributes to the existing knowledge on health crisis communication in combination with culture.
