Abstract
As early as the era of Hippocrates (ca. 460-370 BC), who is traditionally regarded as ‘the father of medicine’, bathing was considered not simply as a measure of hygiene. Its properties of cleaning and refreshing were augmented by more general affects. Soranus described an important one in the passage: its healing and curing qualities. Bathing in thermal-mineral springs or baths was considered one of the means by which a person could both maintain and restore health. This thesis focuses on the medical influence of thermal-mineral baths in Italy between the 1st-3rd century AD.
