Abstract

Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's positive conception of difference posits that difference, or variation, is not necessarily only derivative, but can in fact be primary. If we accept this, then constants are extracted from variation, rather than variation derived from constants. In this thesis we engage with the concepts of ethnicity, identity, and authenticity in light of the multicultural society of the United States. We look at the implications that a positive conception of difference has on our understanding of these concepts and how we might further develop them toward a future with greater openness to difference.
