Abstract
Women entrepreneurs are inferior position compared to men entrepreneurs when they seek financial investments for their business, as the Gender Funding Gap suggests. Therefore, this master thesis focusses on the differences in the experiences of men and women entrepreneurs when they try to obtain financial funding. The study has a qualitative nature, and is conducted through in-depth, semi-structured interviews.
The findings show that the experience of men and women entrepreneurs is indeed different, although women are not always aware of their disadvantages. Gender stereotypes and homophily, combined with a men dominated investing world are the main reason why women entrepreneurs are disadvantaged when they seek funding. However, this study also shows a change in the discourse of gender entrepreneurship that highlights up increase of advantages and privileges for women entrepreneurs.
This research is limited by a small sample size, and therefore the findings are difficult to generalize. Additionally, other influential factors of intersectionality were not considered in this research. Finally, 11 out of the 12 entrepreneurs in this research succeeded in the obtainment of funding, and this success bias can positively influence the outcomes.
This research adds to the existing body of literature that focusses on the Gender Funding Gap.
