Abstract

Gender identity has gained significant attention in recent years, both in the media and politics. While sex refers to the biological attributes of individuals, gender encompasses the inner experience of gender and the socially constructed roles that influence self-perception and interactions in society. The recognition of gender identities that differ from cisgender has become a global conversation. However, the Dutch government continues to adhere to a binary classification of genders, failing to recognize non-binaries and transgenders in their administration. This research aims to investigate how pension funds recognize non-binaries and transgenders in the Dutch pension system and explore the relationship between this recognition and the pension gender gap. Using a qualitative approach, interviews and document analysis were conducted at TKP, one of the largest pension administration organizations in the Netherlands. The study focused on three pension funds with varying gender distributions. Data collection addressed themes of pension administration, defined contribution regulation, and communication. The study found that pension funds do not adequately recognize non-binaries and transgenders, leading to an exclusion from the pension gender gap analysis. To bridge this gap, changes in the registration process, consideration of biological and social aspects affecting life expectancy, and improvements in communication practices are necessary.
