Abstract
In the 1990s, the central government released a briefing called the “Fourth Memorandum on Spatial Planning Extra,” which allowed a number of cities to develop new housing projects close to already-existing areas. One of the goals of the Vinex-neighborhoods was to reduce car mobility. Despite this, the actual reduction in car usage within Vinex-neighborhoods, including Waalsprong, has been very minimal. In Nijmegen-Noord (Waalsprong) the average car ownership is almost twice as high as the rest of Nijmegen, suggesting that the neighbourhood remains less accessible by public transport than other neighbourhoods of the city. Public transport can be a compelling solution to car dependence by encouraging residents to leave their cars at home, improving travel times, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, promoting a shift towards public transport requires understanding factors influencing resident choices. This research project focuses on public transport usage in Waalsprong, a Vinex neighbourhood originally envisioned with limited car dependence. This research aims to determine what factors influence high car usage in the Waalsprong neighbourhood of Nijmegen, which was designed specifically to reduce the amount of cars and provide accessible and reliable public transportation, cycling infrastructure, and walking infrastructure. To achieve this, surveys were conducted with the current residents of Waalsprong, interviews were held with stakeholders who are responsible for implementation and provision of public transportation, and various documents were analyzed to better understand the current situation with accessibility in the neighbourhood.
