Abstract
This paper engages with the notion of transcendence and failed transcendence in two novels by Tom McCarthy: Remainder and C. Tom McCarthy claims to use failed transcendence in his novels. Furthermore, in a declaration given by the INS, McCarthy stated that transcendence is impossible. However, this paper claims that there are clear instances of transcendence in both Remainder and C. It substantiates these claims by using definitions of transcendence and failed transcendence, comparing these definitions and using them to analyse the novel through close readings. Finally, it will explain how transcendence engages with both protagonists.
