Abstract

The Mona Lisa is known as the most famous art work in the world. This begs the question whether this status has any impact on its conservation policy. Therefore, this thesis aims to answer the research question “How does the status of the Mona Lisa relate to its conservation policy?” through the analysis of the reception history of the Mona Lisa, its past and current conservation policies, and comparative research with other works by Leonardo. This research has concluded that the status of the Mona Lisa influences the conservation policy in two ways: its display and its climate-controlled box. In addition, the research shows that the status of the Mona Lisa also influences the conservation policy of other art works, such as the Prado Mona Lisa. This thesis has contributed to the fields of cultural heritage by analysing the social influence on the conservation policy of a very important art work.
