Abstract

Lately, the Islamic veil has been used and contested within media and politics. This contestation does not escape the classroom. Therefore, the aim of this research is to gain insight into the ways in which the environment of institutes of higher education interact with the experiences of veiled Muslims that attend the HAN in Nijmegen or the Radboud University. The research showed that the meaning of the veil is different for each woman, though all women shared the idea that the veil is part of their identity. Besides this, the research showed that unease and negative experiences were confronted by the veiled Muslim students of the HAN in their interactions with other students. The facilities of both the HAN and the RU were experienced as positively contributing to their experiences of the educational environment. Thus this research shows that (religious) facilities have a positive influence on the experiences of all veiled Muslim students, where interactions with other students might have a negative influence on the experiences of veiled Muslims that attend the HAN.
