Abstract

This study aimed to give an understanding of the link between gender, CEO compensation and firm performance. Since prior literature has focused on an American sample or one European country and only on the link between gender and CEO compensation or on gender and firm performance, not on both relationships, this study focuses on the European Union as a whole and both relationships. This is done with a sample of 1,717 CEO year observations between 2011 and 2019. The sample consists of 1676 men and 41 women. There are several statistical tests done. The outcome of these tests is that there is no link between a man CEO and CEO compensation. There is also no link between men CEOs and firm performance. However, there is a link between CEO compensation and firm performance. There is found no evidence that the gender of the CEO has a stronger influence on this relationship.
