Abstract

In this MA-thesis, I re-evaluated the question 'How can the activities of the Sulpicii of Puteoli be characterized between 25-62 AD?'. To answer this question, I examined several activities which the Sulpicii documented in the tabulae that are currently known to us, which are: (1) lending (secured), (2) funding (of their organisation) and deposits, (3) credit intermediation, (4) money transfers and (5) providing credit at auctions. My main conclusion was that the Sulpicii can be called 'bankers' in the modern sense of the word, just as they can be called 'financial intermediaries. Furthermore, they can be seen as faeneratores in the Ancient World. Yet, they cannot be called argentarii, because there is not enough evidence in their archive to support such a definition of the Sulpicii.
