Abstract

As a result of the global climate crisis, more pressure is put on the sustainability of cities. Green spaces are influential in urban areas, providing ecological as well as social and cultural benefits. Live music events held in these green spaces impact the whole dynamic of the city, therefore it is important to analyse the sustainability of these events. This research is focused on the sustainability of live music events held in the Goffertpark, Nijmegen, analysed through the case of The Nest festival. Through the use of qualitative methods, consisting of interviews with stakeholders and document analysis, an accurate representation of the current situation of the festival was established. Situating this in the wider debate on sustainability challenges. From the results can be concluded that the impact of The Nest Festival consists predominantly of carbon emissions, caused by suppliers, visitors, crew and artists. The festival already has several projects running to mitigate its impacts, most of which revolve around waste separation and disposal. The festival faces several obstacles and opportunities in further improving its sustainability. Since The Nest Festival is only recently concerned with sustainability, it would be interesting to analyse the development of environmental practices in the upcoming years.
