Abstract
The research examined whether and how the structure contributes to the effectiveness of the ‘MDO as part of the network collaboration of subnetwork haematology’ through a structure-orientated diagnosis of MDO. In doing so, the research aimed to discover whether there is a potential gap between the desired structure of MDO as part of the network collaboration of subnetwork haematology, and the discovered structure. The research uses qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and document analysis, to provide a structural diagnosis of subnetwork haematology. Findings reveal several potential gaps between the desired and the discovered structure of the MDOs of subnetwork haematology. The first two parameters – functional concentration, separation of operational and regulatory activities – do not appear the be problematic and therefore no gap can be found. The other parameters – specialisation of operational activities, differentiation of operational activities and formalisation – several potential gaps between the desired and the discovered structure of the MDOs of subnetwork haematology are discovered related to additional information exchange of patient records between different hospitals in the region, the variation in the detail of patient data provided and the timeliness of radiological information which can cause inefficiencies. This research emphasises theoretical applicability and flexibility of De Sitter's (1994) theory on improving network collaboration and efficiency, which creates the potential for future research to further explore other network contexts. Recommendation for future research are increasing the sample size, taking 'Quality of Work' into account, conduct comparative studies and look at the influence of the developments around 'Onco Oost
