Abstract

In this paper an experiment was performed to study the effects of the level of endowment distributions and the presence of a threshold on the contributions made in public good games. The experiment was conducted using a survey design in which participants had to play a public goods game. A two-way and subsequently performed three-way ANOVA were used. The results from this study show that participants tend to contribute less under unequal distributions. Furthermore, in an explorative search, this study showed that gender impacts the effect of inequality on contributions. Men tend to increase contributions under inequality, whereas women decrease their contributions under inequality. The effect of the threshold is impacted by gender as well. The introduction of a threshold increases contribution for men, but has no impact on the contributions made by women. These findings contradict current literature on the effect of gender on contributions.
