Abstract

This study investigates the potential effects of the presence and respectively the absence of idiomatic language use in business related emails on the perceived comprehensibility of those emails and the perceived competence of the writer of those emails. Additionally, it is tested whether any effects can be found of whether the writer is a native or non-native speaker of English on the perceived comprehensibility and competence. The perceived comprehensibility and competence are evaluated by Dutch L2 speakers of English.
