Abstract
The emergence of internalizing problem behaviors (social anxiety, depression & loneliness) in
early adolescence has previously been studied on two distinct levels of explanation: Focusing
on intra-personal development it has been shown that internalizing behaviors precede and
reinforce each other. In interpersonal theories, internalizing behaviors are related to effects of
friendship selection (i.e. students choose friends with similar levels of internalizing behaviors)
and socialization (i.e. friends become more similar to each other in their internalizing
behaviors over time). This study is the first to integrate both accounts into one social network
approach, using SIENA and a sample of N = 302 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 14.
Results indicate that social anxiety predicts intra-personal development of loneliness and
depression, while interpersonal socialization effects seem to have a beneficial effect on
loneliness. In contrast to previous research, no selection and socialization effects for
depression and social anxiety were found. Implications of these results are discussed.
