This thesis presents a study which investigates the position of Speaker Oriented Adverbs (SpOAs) with regard to the specificity of the subject in order to get more insight into the syntactic structure of Standard English. Corpus research was carried out to analyse to position of SpOAs in both the linear order and the syntactic structure. The primary goal of this thesis was to provide evidence for Kiss’ (1996) proposal of there being two VP-external subject positions in English when taking Ernst’s (1996) analysis of the lexical semantics of SpOAs into account.en_US
