Abstract

In a world increasingly concerned with sustainable development, businesses are under growing pressure to align their operation with social and environmental objectives. This study explores the development and associated challenges of a sustainable supply chain within the context of a social business, that operates with several tiers in a developing country. Specifically, this research adopts a singular case study of a Dutch social business in the cosmetic industry, aiming to establish a sustainable value chain with multiple tiers in Colombia. Through a qualitative approach, this thesis uncovers valuable insights into local embedding, building trust-based relationships, and implementing compliance mechanisms such as checks and supervision together with educational activities to promote sustainability awareness among local partners. Furthermore, local stakeholder involvement is important in the setting-up phase and monitoring sustainable practices. The results of this study contribute to the literature by providing insights for organisations seeking to develop sustainable value chains in developing countries, extending beyond one-tier relationships. In addition, this thesis sheds light on the underexposed perspective of a social business in the context of sustainable supply chain development. Therefore, this study delivers valuable insights for academics and practitioners striving to create sustainable value chains.
