Abstract

This research explores the combination of carepath and structure literature to evaluate carepaths in a big university medical centre in the Netherlands. More detailed, structure literature is used as an addition to carepath literature, to evaluate carepaths more detailed. It is debated that structure literature is helpful for evaluation, since carepaths are flows in healthcare. This entails that evaluation criteria for flows can be useful for the evaluation of carepaths. Based on the combination of carepath evaluation criteria and evaluation criteria for flows, an evaluation framework for carepaths is created in this research. This evaluation framework was used for the comparison of the actual state to the desired situation. Data was derived by interviews with health professionals and documents. Results showed that the carepaths comply to various evaluation criteria, however they do not comply with the criteria regarding homogeneity, inclusion of technical solutions and process executed in the carepath. Following these results, it is recommended to create more strict guidelines regarding several aspects of the carepaths. However, since this research is conducted in four carepaths, future research could use this evaluation as a kick-start for a more complete evaluation.
