Abstract

There have been increasing instances of populist movements in Canada. For example, the so-called 2022 Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa, and the #WEXIT movement. There is currently also a more populist movement in the center-right Conservative Party of Canada, the Official Opposition. In an overview of Canadian populist politics in the twentieth century, I focused on the emergence of right-wing populism, first as a regional and provincial movement in the Alberta Social Credit Party and other smaller populist movements as a result of the Great Depression, before turning into the federal Reform Party/Canadian Alliance and finally merging with the Progressive Conservatives to form the Conservative Party of Canada. This work has shown that it has had a considerable influence throughout the twentieth century, and that this influence continued throughout the twenty-first century in different party systems. There are, in fact, considerable transatlantic and transpacific influences on Canadian populism.
