Abstract

Worldwide 1 in 3 women are insufficiently physically active to stay healthy (WHO, 2018). Boxing Sisters offers accessible boxing classes for women over 17 years old to stimulate physical activity. Although initially, women regularly attend the 8-weeks' boxing classes, there is a decrease in bookings from week 4 onwards. Two studies have been performed to investigate the decrease in bookings. The first study investigated the important factors in the decision-making process to follow boxing classes. For this study 706 participants filled in a self-report questionnaire, which confirmed the influence of the factors: enjoyment, attachment, importance of health and fitness, effort costs and sense of achievement. Furthermore, intention predicted 26,2% of the variance in behaviour confirming the existence of the intention-behaviour gap. Based on the findings from the first study, an intervention was conducted. At the start of week 3, 5 and 7, participants (N=138) in the intervention condition received a reminder triggering enjoyment, importance of health and fitness, and sense of achievement. The control group (N=50) didn’t receive reminders. Both conditions showed a difference in the number of bookings between week 1 till 4 and 5 till 8. The intervention group had a similar drop in bookings, indicating that reminders were ineffective. Future studies should further explore the influence of the intention-behaviour gap in the exercise domain. Keywords: sport participation, intention-behaviour gap, self-efficacy, enjoyment, health and fitness, sense of achievement, reminders.
