Abstract
Education is a key tool to address global challenges such as inequality, but the current Dutch educational structure is not fully equipped to do that. There has been a historical focus on a dominant epistemological perspective often based on a Western or even white perspective. However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of addressing gender, equality, diversity and inclusion inside and outside the classroom. One key tactic for doing this is multiculturalism, often integrated into the critical curriculum approach. However, currently these course are offered as mostly electives, resulting in many students graduating without much knowledge or skills regarding to inequality. This research aims to understand the contribution of GEDI courses to raising awareness and knowledge about (in)equalities in the world. An inductive qualitative study has been conducted, leading to three main themes in the data analysis: (1) personal experiences and emotions, (2) learning outcomes and (3) challenges and misconceptions around GEDI courses. The courses broadened student’s understanding of (in)equality beyond their mandatory curriculum, exposing them to new perspectives, theories and critical issues. By equipping students with specialised vocabulary and linguistic competences, these courses enhance their ability to articulate thoughts and engage in meaningful dialogues.
