Abstract
Increasing urbanization leads to more compact cities, but despite living in closer proximity, community building among urban dwellers is decreasing. Co-living is an emerging housing typology that has a particular focus on sharing and community. Studies on other collaborative typologies showed that certain characteristics can promote social interaction and community building. This study explores the relation between co-living and community building among millenials by a qualitative analysis of three Dutch co-living cases in Amsterdam. The variable ‘community building’ is deconstructed into behavior and feeling components based on previous research. Results show that several co-living characteristics create the opportunity for casual interaction and small scale events. In turn, this results in more familiarity, which fosters various community building components. Finally, this study identifies several social and physical factors that influence the use and effect of co-living on community building.
