Abstract

This research examines the portrayal of non-western people in Apocalypse Now and American Sniper, thus specifically focusing on people from the Middle East and Asia. It seeks to find and apply elements of film that are used to emphasize and enhance the stereotypical and often negative representation of these people. Exploring firstly the concept of Orientalism provides a theoretical framework upon which the film analysis is based, and this is further supported by Film Art: an Introduction, by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. After analyzing different scenes from both movies, the study concludes that orientalist representation of non-western people in Hollywood film is still and issue to this day, and wishes to encourage debates surrounding this topic, as well as related debates on racism, colonialism, and xenophobia.
