Abstract
International visa restrictions limit the mobility of people around the world. To what extent someone’s mobility is limited solely depends on their country of birth. For instance, an inhabitant of Germany can visit 177 countries without a visa, while a Syrian inhabitant can only visit 32 countries without a visa. When analyzing the visa restriction index of Henley & Partners, it looks like the mobility of inhabitants of poor, third world or Muslim countries are affected more by these visa restrictions than the mobility of inhabitants of Western countries. In this bachelor thesis, the problem will first be analyzed from a Syrian standpoint, to better understand the difficult situation they are in. First I will determine whether Syrian inhabitants experience social inequalities because of these restrictions. After this, the visa policy of the European Union will be described. In the end, I will formulate improvements for this visa policy in order to tackle or limit the social inequality Syrian inhabitants face.
