Abstract

This study examines the relationship between temperature variability and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Lately, climate scientists have highlighted that climate change can not only alter mean temperatures but also lead to changes in temperature variability, emphasizing the need for temperature variability research. To conduct this research, I created a novel dataset by combining daily temperature and annual precipitation MERRA-2 reanalysis satellite data with a panel data set extracted from the Global Data Lab. The dataset exists of an unbalanced panel set for the years 1995-2018 for 291 subnational units and a fixed effects method is used to conduct the analysis. I find that neither low or high levels of temperature variability affect child mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the results show a clear effect of low and high levels of precipitation on child mortality, indicating that precipitation is a more important factor affecting child mortality than temperature variability in sub-Saharan Africa.
