Abstract

This research touches upon the causes of democratic recession. The aim is to clarify what the causal mechanism is for decreasing democratic scores within Central and Eastern European countries. First an outline of democratic recession is given, then the causes are given, with special attention to civil society and its role in the process. A small N-comparison shows seven Central and Eastern European countries and the democratic scores compared to the possible causes (economic, institutional and civic). The several causes are taken from existing scientific articles. To further clarify the role of civil society a case study into Hungary is conducted. The current idea of the role of civil society is challenged in the democratic recession process in Hungary. Resulting in an overview of democratic recession and its causes. In this way it is shown what the role of civil society together with other causes is.
