Abstract

This research aims to add knowledge on behavioural patterns in knowledge production of/by participants during game theory driven facilitated modelling. This research describe what type of knowledge production occurs during facilitated modelling interventions and explain how these types are a result of various behaviours. To analyse these dimensions, a micro analysis has been performed on transcripts from eight different game theory driven facilitated workshops that were performed with participants from the Dutch railway industry. Central to these workshops were strategic decisions that had been made or are to be made in the near future. Three knowledge production types: generative, collaborative, and assertive, and ten behaviours have been used to analyse the transcripts. This resulted in specific behaviour sets during different knowledge production types. As a result, we found that generative knowledge is the most occurring knowledge production type, being observed in 65 segments throughout the different workshops. Collaborative knowledge production was found in 43 segments and assertive knowledge production was only found in 6 segments. Within these knowledge production types different behavioural patterns were observed for each type. This leads to descriptions of behavioural patterns of each knowledge production type. As such we conclude that generative knowledge production is very likely to be initiated by proposing behaviour, which is followed up by building, affirming and challenging behaviour. Collaborative knowledge production is heavily reliant on building behaviour in every stage. Finally, assertive knowledge production is more shows a wider range of behaviours and a higher relative rate of challenging behaviour during later stages of knowledge production.
