Abstract
This research was conducted in the Operating Rooms department of a Dutch academic hospital. In this thesis, I focused on the development of a framework for benchmarking sustainability in an OR-department, in order to support organizational decision-making and action on sustainability. This objective was achieved through the use of qualitative research methods, using template analysis to analyze the interview material and documents collected throughout this research. This research proposes a framework for benchmarking sustainability in an OR-department based on a number of indicators deemed relevant by the departmental members. The practical challenges of measuring sustainability were taken into account to arrive at a qualitative approach of assessing performance, which can be used to inform decision-making and planning on corporate sustainability on a strategic level. As such, this research contributed to the existing body of research on sustainability and performance measurements. Additionally, this research pointed to a number of challenges associated with implementing sustainability initiatives in the organizational unit. In doing so, this research contributed to the literature on organizational development and corporate sustainability by making insightful elements of institutional complexity in the hospital context and how this affected the attempts of organizational actors to introduce a sustainability logic.
