Abstract
This master’s thesis brings forward the ideas of artists regarding their autonomous artistry in relationship with the audience of their work in the public domain. The philosophical and conceptual theoretical framework about art in the public domain is discussed according to the studies of Jacques Rancière, Pascal Gielen and Jeroen Boomgaard. In addition, two Dutch artists, Sander Breure en Witte van Hulzen, with their performance How can we know the dancer from the dance?, performed for the project Public Works in 2016 at Utrecht Central Station and based on the movements of the by-passers, are the central focus of this research.
