Abstract
The aim of this research is to find out how the first-generation Afghan refugees are economically integrated, and whether there has been a change in their commitment, regarding the commitment targets work and family. Although different elements are known to influence commitment, limited research has been done on commitment in the context of refugees. This study used Commitment System Theory (CST) to study multiple commitments of Afghan refugees who came to the Netherlands in the period 1980 until 2000. A qualitative study was carried out, by using narrative analysis it was possible to comprehend and understand the experiences of Afghan refugees. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with twenty-nine refugees. Fourteen of the life stories of participants with previous education and work experience in Afghanistan, were used for this study. The findings show that a large proportion of Afghan refugees are economically integrated and that family is an important element in the commitment, and that commitment to work is also strong.
