Since the middle of the 20th century, migration to the Netherlands has grown substantially. Most of the immigrants were recruited to do low-wage jobs, others were postcolonial migrants, and a smaller amount are political refugees. A substantial part of these migrants is Muslim, and consequently with these migrants a new religion arrived in the Netherlands. Over the years, the presence of the Islam in public life has become more and more present - this presence entails not only physical changes, it also encompasses changes that are less obvious to see. Recently, the institutionalisation of the Islam in the public sphere of the Netherlands has been the source of emotional debates in the light of difficult integration. Many negative developments in Dutch society are linked to (muslim) migrants and increasingly, rightwinged political parties use this sentiment in their rhetoric. In this thesis the social and political tension which is the result of the arrival of the Islam in the Netherlands has been analyzed in context of the phenomenon of the ‘public sphere’. A well functioning public sphere is an important precondition for a good working democracy, and a well functioning public sphere needs participation of all social groups. However, the way in which many people in the Netherlands perceive the public sphere limits it to place for rational discussion and with no interference of religion or religious tradition.en_US
