Abstract

By analyzing the religiosity of young Egyptian Sunni Muslim men through the dimensions of Text and Pre-Text in relation to the Revelation to Muhammed, this thesis aims to explore the applicability of Ahmed’s scholastic conceptualization to Muslim religiosity on the ground and provides insights into the religiosity of Muslim youth. Using ethnography as a methodological tool, I conclude that the religiosity of young Egyptian Sunni Muslim men must be characterized as engagement with the dimension of Text rather than Pre-Text. I argue that Ahmed’s confined idea of the dimension of Pre-Text leads to a conceptual deficiency. As a solution, I propose to look at Islam as hermeneutical engagement with Text, Pre-Text, and Con-Text in relation to the Revelation to Muhammed within the framework of grand schemes in everyday life.
