Abstract

Music studies has acknowledged the importance of affect, I present a case study that further exemplifies this point, while arguing that music genre studies has yet to include the importance of the importance of affect in relation to bands who include multiple musical styles. Music that lies at the intersection of multiple genres is overlooked or underdiscussed. Khruangbin, a trio band from Houston, released their latest album Mordechai in 2020 and are influenced by many (cultural) music genres from around the world, this is heard in their music. I dissect how the cultural musical influences are folded into their song “Pelota” by looking at the musical motion of the piece and the affectual response the musical lines elicit. By combining genre studies, analysis of musical motion and the notion of affect, this work problematizes the method of classification of the musical genre in relation to music that expresses influence from multiple (cultural) musical genres.
