Abstract
The urge of climate change and an increase in urbanisation request cities to develop new concepts. One of them are smart cities. There is a lot of research done examining the theoretical conceptions of smart cities. However, research lacks of the practical achievements smart cities can contribute towards climate change. Energy transition is indispensable to fight climate change. This research evaluates the question in how far smart cities can contribute to energy transition. The framework of analysis is the network theory. A comparative case study of the smart cities Amsterdam and Cologne was conducted and data have been collected from several semi-structured interviews, observations as well as literature research. The research has shown that smart city projects are an important tool to supplement the administrative process of energy transition. Through their voluntary character they manage to reach different actors and help them to find new opportunities in the energy market. The case studies have also shown that cities have different characters. Therefore every city has to develop its own smart city approach for a successful smart city project. This research gives an insight of important aspects which contribute to energy transition in smart city projects. Further research could elaborate them.
