Abstract
Increasing demand for food, the use of biofuels and flex crops have led to increasing demand for land. This has
led to land grabs all over the globe, especially in Africa, Latin America, Asia but also in Eastern Europe.
Nevertheless, the impacts of land grabs remain unclear, especially regarding the impact of land grabbing on
development. To further analyse this issue, I conduct a mixed-methods analysis into the impact of land grabbing
on development accounting for institutions and agricultural dependence. This study contributes to the existing
literature by providing a quantitative analysis and by testing whether the employed hypotheses hold true for
several regions, enabling more informed policy making in response to land grabs. While land grabbing data has
several limitations, this study provides further insights into the implications land grabs have for people´s
standard of living. Further interviews with experts in the field enrich the analysis providing a deeper insight into
the relationship between land grabbing and development than an empirical analysis alone. While the results
remain inconclusive, in line with many of the findings of the existing literature, this study provides some insights
into the issues when employing quantitative data, aiding future analyses.
