Abstract
The two stories abou Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12:1-24 and 1Kings 14:21-31 are the only instance in Kings where a king gets two separate stories where he is the subject. On top of this, the two stories are seemingly unaware the other one exists. This thesis aims to prove, through a thorough synchronic and diachronic analysis of the two stories, that the differences between the two stories are exemplary of the differences between the two different narratives that exist in Samuel-Kings: the 'founding fathers' narrative and the 'two kingdoms' narrative. The first story of Rehoboam fits into the first narrative, while the second one fits into the second. This explains the differences and gives the first narrative a fitting ending, in the collapse of the 'United Monarchy'.
