Abstract

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental problems of the 21st century, contributing to the triple planetary crises. It causes environmental destruction and disproportionately affects vulnerable communities across the world. Plastics are polluting throughout their life cycle, starting from extraction to disposal. While many governments and organisations have come up with various solutions and initiatives to tackle the situation from the regional to local levels, the complexity of plastic pollution and its transboundary nature require interventions beyond solutions at the national level. The global response to this crisis is to develop a legally binding instrument to address plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, facilitated by the UNEP and commonly known as the Global Plastics Treaty. Considering its disproportionate impacts, especially in the marine environment, this thesis explores how ocean justice is integrated into the emerging instrument and how civil society organisations participate and encounter in developing this Treaty.
