Abstract

This thesis examines the evolution of failed state discourse from the early 1990s until present time, as used in strategic national security documents of the United States and the United Kingdom. Hereby, it focusses on the 9/11 terrorist attacks as a turning point in history and on the current criticisms on the concept. In doing so, this thesis hopes to explicate the evolution of the failed state concept and to show how the United States and the United Kingdom used this paradigm in their security strategies. This research finds that the United States and the United Kingdom have indeed used the failed state paradigm to fit their own political agendas and that the current criticisms on the concept are thus justified.
