Abstract
English has become incredibly diverse. Some consider Scots a language, but many still classify it a dialect of English. Many languages show mutual intelligibility, yet are readily accepted as separate languages. I seek to answer two research questions: Are the features and developments of Scots comparable to the developments that English went through to become a language? Is the current situation and status of Scots similar to situations that other languages were in when they became recognized as languages?
The linguistic developments of English and Scots are examined.
There is disagreement on the status of Scots but support for increasing use and awareness of Scots (Gerrard, 2020).
There's a look at how some other languages are closely related to each other and how they became accepted as separate languages.
In conclusion, Scots is different from English and reflects how other languages became accepted. Future research can look at diverging dialects.
