Abstract
This research aims to investigate if the pressure to achieve in Western neoliberal societies undermines the individual freedom they promote. Neoliberalism guarantees personal liberty and self-fulfilment while simultaneously imposing relentless demands for achievement and success. The tension between the concept of unlimited freedom and the pressure to achieve raises questions regarding authenticity of freedom in such circumstances. This thesis examines how societal mechanisms and capitalist ideologies linking success to wellbeing may impact individual freedom through external and internal constraints. It analyses the way neoliberal societies use internalised psychological and disciplinary techniques to ultimately transform individuals into self-regulating projects.
