Abstract

This study investigates how medieval accusations made against Jews, like ritual crucifixion and host desecration cases, were influenced by different events surrounding these allegations. The host desecration case of Paris in 1290 is used as a case study to show how political events might have pushed Pope Boniface VIII to give credence to a tale which popes up to that point had normally refuted. The most important implication of the research is that all of these accusation should be reappraised in light of their surrounding events. In this way, our knowledge of how these accusations came to light can greatly improve.
