Abstract

The thesis aims to examine the prevalence, course, and co-presence of dysarthria and dysphagia in patients with Mitochondrial Diseases (MD). Besides, the study investigates whether several speech and swallowing tests correlate with the clinical syndromes of MD and/or with swallowing and disease severity scales. The retrospective file study includes adults diagnosed with MD who participated in a multidisciplinary admission within the Radboud university medical centre between January 2015 and April 2023. Dysarthria and dysphagia were examined in the patients by administering several speech and swallowing tests. The disease severity was also assessed. The study included 224 MD patients with a median age of 42 years of whom 37.5% were male. The pooled prevalence of dysarthria was 33.8% and of dysphagia 35%. Referral of MD patients to a speech therapist should therefore be considered.
