Abstract

To generate more knowledge on legitimacy management in the Dutch construction industry this research was written. The research was a multiple case study with a qualitative approach. The data collection included document analysis and six semi structured interviews. The data was analysed using a three-step plan. The cases of the research were two operating companies located in the construction industry. Next to that a company was consulted who focuses on projects in urban development, construction sector, real estate and infrastructure. The legitimacy of Dutch Construction companies was affected by the nitrogen crisis. The results of this research demonstrated that the Dutch Construction Industry was affected by the new laws and regulations imposed by the Dutch government. This were mainly the infrastructure projects and less for the real estate projects. In order to fulfil the new laws and regulations, the operating companies were actively changing their organisational practises to the new demands of society. This was done, not only as a reaction on the regulations, but also because the companies were otherwise afraid that the continuity of the business would be jeopardised, which could also affect their legitimacy. This action is similar to the legitimation strategy of isomorphic adaptation.
