Abstract

In this dissertation I aim to provide a cartographic reading of the present through spatiovisual analyses of contemporary cinematic cities in the American context; an attempt to make sense of an emergent constellation of urban motion-images that I wish to call, for better or for worse, metamodern urban cinema. I will sketch the contours of this new discourse in broad brushstrokes, mapping representations and thematizations of place in the cinematic cities of Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze and Paul Thomas Anderson that cannot any longer be understood in a Baudrillardian-Jamesonian postmodern vernacular. As such, I will be attentive to the ways in which these directors reterritorialize the postmodern commonplace and once again hinge on modern notions of place.
