Abstract

Dating profiles often consist to a large extent of written text, based on which dating platform user decide whether they are interested. Therefore, it is of high interest to see which text components and information are likely to affect people ́s perception. As a result, the following online experiment investigated whether language errors and the knowledge about a writers (non)nativeness would affect the evaluation of a writer ́s perceived trustworthiness, intelligence, attractiveness, and the subsequent dating intention. In contrast to previous studies, answers of 131 participants showed that perceived trustworthiness, attractiveness and dating intention were not influenced by the two factors “language errors” and “knowledge about (non)nativeness”. However, it was found that perceived intelligence was indeed influenced by language errors, leading to the conclusion that a writer of a profile which contained language errors, was perceived as less intelligent than a profile writer, who did not include any language errors.
