Abstract

This thesis examines the philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Rosi Braidotti with regard to their views of the subject. Sartre and Braidotti both present compelling arguments for why their respective existential and posthuman philosophies are the most accurate understanding of the subject. I explore what their theories are and the ethical implications that follow from their conceptions of the subject. Subsequently, I argue that Sartre’s theory of consciousness allows room for a more posthuman interpretation of the subject than he first thought. Ultimately, I propose that a synthesis between the two theories is possible. One that compensates for their respective weaknesses and which I have dubbed the posthuman-existential subject.
