There’s a new patron in town, argue researchers Renee Steenbergen and Yoeri Albrecht in recent studies. Since state fundings for the arts have been reduced, the importance of private support has become more and more appreciated in the Netherlands. Part of the discussion about patronage are people who could also be considered art collectors. This study explains how these people situate themselves in the art field. How do people who are involved with modern art communicate about this? How do they explain their role in the art field? For this purpose I have chosen three case studies who are situated at the interface between patron and art collector. By analyzing their expressions in the media, this study aims to answer the question: How do collectors of modern visual arts communicate with their intended audience and how do they characterize their motives and position in the art field?en_US
