Abstract

The philosophical field of biopolitical studies has been preoccupied with the many ways in which political power interacts with both social and biological life. While much has been written on the relationship between biopolitics and a variety of scientific domains, the field of international law has generally been lacking in biopolitical analyses. This thesis provides an overview of the ways in which international law figures within the biopolitical projects of Hannah Arendt, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, and Achille Mbembe. By comparing their interrogations of the concepts of sovereignty, human rights and genocide, this thesis comprehensively maps their engagement with international law and aims to explore the many ways in which biopolitics and international law come to overlap.
