Abstract
The objective of the study was to provide knowledge on how consumers experience their engagement with mHealth apps focused on mental health. Furthermore, it aims to provide a
paradoxical lens toward the experiences and the way users cope with paradoxical tension. The results consist of semi-structured interviews among 11 respondents that currently use a mHealth app focused on mental wellness. The most occurring positive interface experiences of the app were the effect on the mental wellness which consists of a relaxed feeling, helps to process the day and leaves the user with a satisfied and happy feeling. Besides that, the ease of use, a nice voice and stimulating
notifications were found as positive. Whereas the most occurring negative interface experiences were the costs for full usability, bad notifications, not enough innovation and too much information or functionalities. Furthermore, the paradoxes elicit both positive and negative emotions when
interacting with the app, such as satisfaction and frustration. These experiences uncovered paradoxes, which are fulfill/create needs, engaging/disengaging, control/chaos, efficiency/inefficiency and lastly availability/unavailability. Finally, paradoxes lead to tensions, in the way users interact with their experiences. When users negatively experience tension this induces emotions of temporary neglect, distancing, abandonment and adjusting. If positive experiences are present, accommodation is present.
